Now it's going to South Africa. In addition to a short tour of South African cities and townships, the band has produced a jazz CD. Palm Springs High School, which was one of 20 local public schools that received more than $500,000 worth of musical instruments and sheet music in September, is using those instruments to advance its students' music appreciation, band director Brian Ingelson said. “The donation of instruments and music have allowed students to play quality instruments and to participate in some amazing performances,” Ingelson said. “The flugelhorn that Barry donated was played on the jazz band CD that is getting some airtime on KJJZ (FM), and the timpani benefit the entire ensemble's sound.” The band members will leave Tuesday for South Africa. They'll perform in Cape Town and the township of Fezemah, followed by Johannesburg and a concert in the park in Soweto. Then they'll take a safari inland to the Mambula conservancy. Last month, the band took an overnight bus ride to Las Vegas to see Manilow perform his “Ultimate Manilow: The Hits” show at the Las Vegas Hilton. Manilow met the students and talked to them about his home in Palm Springs, and gave them a behind-the-scenes look at how he prepares for his show. They then watched with 1,500 fans. Ingelson said Manilow picked up the bill for the experience and also gave them something money can't buy. “In terms of Barry's gift of the Las Vegas experience, the show gave the students a new perspective of what a professional musician does and the impact that music can have,” Ingelson said. “The vast majority of students had never seen a live concert and the opportunity to go up on stage and see the hall from the performer's perspective truly impacted the students. I guarantee it is something they will never forget.” 5.26.09 Manilow Provides Lifetime of Memories There are those who talk about helping and then there are those who actually do. At a press conference held at Palm Springs High School, Manilow, determined to revitalize the ailing music programs in schools, did so today by giving over $500,000 in musical instruments to middle and high schools in the Palm Springs, Coachella Valley and Desert Sands Unified School Districts. In response to the needs of the local public schools and their severely depleted music programs, Manilow gathered some friends and formed The Manilow Music Project as part of his nonprofit Manilow Health and Hope Fund. The mission statement of the Manilow Music Project (MMP) highlights the importance of music programs in our schools and donates instruments and materials to school music programs. The MMP is sponsored by Manilow, along with Yamaha, Hal Leonard, Toys ‘R Us Children’s Fund, and the non-profit Manilow Fund For Health and Hope. Manilow spoke to the crowd of teachers, school administrators and special guests in a brief and impassioned speech of encouragement by sharing how his own life had been profoundly changed by music. Having been given the gift of a piano when he was a young boy, Manilow knows first hand the power and ability that music carries in making the difference in a child’s life. Flanked by students representing each of the 20 schools who are the recipients of these instruments, Manilow challenged others to join him in the encouragement and empowerment of our youth. 10.2005 We did it! We raised the money so fast…. It’s shown us that together we can really make a difference, so let’s do it again! Barry and the Manilow Fund for Health and Hope have both agreed…. You donate $1.00… Barry will match your $1.00… and the Manilow Fund will match another $1.00…. so your one dollar becomes $3.00. Barry and the Manilow Fund will match up to a max of $50,000.00 each just like before so we can reach our goal of $150,000.00. Just think, if we raise another $150,000.00 and add that to the $150,000.00 we just raised…. That will be a total of $300,000.00…. and we all know, the Red Cross and the victims of Hurricane Katrina can use every penny. You can use your credit card to donate online at www.manilowfund.com today or send your check or money order to: Manilow Fund for Health & Hope, 8295 S. La Cienega Blvd., Inglewood, CA 90301
